Modified summer registration requirement
Approved August 15, 1999
from:
Full-Time Credit Loads
Master's: 6 credits
Doctoral: 6 credits
Summer: 1 credit for students registered full-time in the preceding year
to:
Full-Time Credit Loads
Master's: 6 credits
Doctoral: 6 credits
Summer: 1 research credit or one course
This change will take effect with the Summer 2000 term.

The two main concerns leading to this recommendation are
1) the original policy would be difficult to implement because it treated as a
special case new students who started in the summer and,
2) students who wanted or were required to take a regular academic course during
the summer might find that their assistantship covered tuition costs for only
one credit.
The new policy is intended to eliminate these concerns.

Clarification added September 2, 1999:
Graduate council representatives recently received formal notification that
the recommended summer registration requirements were approved by the Graduate
School. One council member read this to mean that the minimum summer
registration requirement is 6 credits, but that interpretation is not correct
and I apologize for not stating the requirements more clearly. A more accurate
statement of the entire policy for minimum registration for supported
graduate students is given below. This policy is effective with the
beginning of the 1999 academic year (i.e., now).
Full-Time Credit Load (academic year, per quarter or semester)
MS and PhD: 6 credits
Full-Time Credit Load (summer)
MS and PhD: 1 research credit or one course
Half-Time Credit Load (academic year, per quarter or semester)
MS and PhD: 3 credits
Minimum graduate degree requirements to be effective with the change to
semesters in Fall, 2000, were approved last spring. That policy is given
in the file "cred-req.approved".
