Graduate Tuition:
A copy of the resolution from the Task Force on Graduate Tuition was passed out to everyone. The resolution recommended that future graduate tuition increases be held to the rate of undergraduate rate increases. This was sent to the administration but it is not clear what if any impact it had.
A motion was made by T. Courney and 2nd by A. Meyer to support the task force's resolution and forwarded to the President, Interim Provost, and Strategic Planning Group. After some discussion of background, and some slight clarifying statements, the GSC resulition was unanimously endorsed. Dave Landon will email the full GSC resolution to the GSC for an email vote.
The resolution as emailed reads:
----------------------------------------
Resolution on Graduate Tuition
Be it resolved that The Graduate Council of Michigan Technological University endorses the Recommendation of the Graduate Tuition Task Force. We find compelling the rationale put forth in the recommendation of the Task Force to limit increases in graduate tuition to the rate of resident undergraduate tuition increases. Increases in graduate tuition above this rate are contrary to the goals of expanding our graduate programs and achieving Carnegie I status.
Be it further resolved that copies of this motion be forwarded to the President, Interim Provost of the University, and the Strategic Planning Group.
----------------------------------------
Steve Seidel pointed out that post-undergrad students can pay undergrad rates if not in a grad program. Senior rule status was also discussed. Steve Seidel volunteered to investigate the situation and possible remedies.
Proposed New Cooperative Arrangement with CHung Yuan Christaian Univ.
Jeff Burl made a presentation of the proposed cooperative program. Interesting effect would be that the students would finish most of their M. Eng. work here at MTU before getting their BS degree, in order for them to finish school before required military service.
(secretary had to leave a bit early....)
Next meeting will be April 17 at 4PM.
