Motions were made and seconded to close the nominations and elect them both. Affirmative vote was unanimous.

PhD Proposals

Marilyn Urion reviewed the status of the process, the time line for review, and the constraints of spin off versus regular proposals.

Bruce solicited volunteers to make 5 minute summaries of the PhD proposals:

  • John Jaszczak--Engineering Physics
  • Sheila Grant--Biomedical Engineering
  • Richard Honrath--Atmospheric Sciences
  • C. P. Joshi--Forest Biotechnology
  • J. B. Rafert--Astrophysics

C. J. Tsai mentioned that a proposal for a Forestry Ecology spin off may be forthcoming.

A motion was made and seconded that the Graduate Council write a strong memo of support to the Graduate School, to be forwarded to the University Senate, for the PhD proposals in Forestry Biotechnology, Astrophysics, Atmospheric Sciences, and Engineering Physics, urging that the university supply the necessary resources. The proposals for Computer Science and Biomedical Engineering were also supported, but since they are not currently pursuing rapid approval, will be further considered later. bruce Mork was to draft a memo and circulate it for comments by email. A final draft was to be sent to the Graduate School by 9/15.

The meeting adjourned at approximately 4:30.
